High School Hamlet
Written by William Shakespeare, abridged by Bee Evans.
Hamlet is, understandably, depressed. His uncle (the principal of his school) has murdered his father and married his mother, his childhood best friends are spying on him and he has no idea how to cope with his feelings for his girlfriend. Oh, and his dad’s ghost is trying to communicate with him from beyond the grave.
There is one clear course for Hamlet: revenge. He is going to kill his uncle, whatever it takes – or die trying.
High School Hamlet is a collaborative theatre project working with young people aged 16-20, to adapt and abridge Hamlet for a contemporary UK high school setting.
The play looks at the original tragedy through a sympathetic modern lens, centring mental health and youth agency.
