Audition notice-the cagebirds

Audition Date:

Sunday 9th March 2025 12:30pm

Playing Dates

5th – 8th June 2025

Director Vanessa Coatz

The Cagebirds is an allegorical one-act play exploring the themes of stereotypes and oppression. It is a play for eight women of any age that are confident with learning long monologues as the characters exist in their own world and do not consciously interact with each other so dialogue is limited. This would suit actors who are comfortable with some improvisation and physical theatre as you will be supported to create links between your character and a bird in a cage. Both the audition process and the rehearsals will be collaborative and group based.

Characters:

> The Long-Tongued Gossip – has her nose in everyone’s business, not self-aware, enjoys repeating idioms (p24)

> The Mirror-Eyed Gazer – concerned about her appearance, older woman (p22)

> The Medicated Gloom – complainer, health obsessed, older woman (p23)

> The Regular Thump – negative, aggressive, political reactionary (p23/24)

> The Constant Twitting – unsure of herself, lacks confidence, meek (p24/25)

> The Great Guzzler – obsessed with food, older woman (p22)

> The Wild One – brave, a leader,  commanding, younger woman (p10/11)

> The Mistress – authoritative, calm, measured, benign but controlling (p8-10)
