Playing Dates: Tuesday 13th May to Saturday 17th May 2025.

Overview of the play: Set in the 1960s Murder, Margaret and Me imagines the conversations between two formidable women. Agatha Christie the ‘Queen of Crime’ is not thrilled that her dearest creation Miss Marple will be played by ‘funniest woman alive’ Margaret Rutherford. Rutherford herself is mortified about the prospect of being involved with a film which depicts murder. Both carry secrets that they would rather not reveal and Christie turns sleuth to uncover the secret that Rutherford hid to ensure her reputation remained in tact. The two women form an unlikely friendship and they are helped along the way by mysterious ‘spinster’ who bears more than a passing resemblance to a familiar detective. The play will performed in the round and rehearsals will begin in February. Rehearsal days can be discussed at audition but likely to be Monday, Wednesday evening and Sunday mornings.
Audition overview:
I will be giving a 10-15 minute time slot for each audition. I will send through audition pieces and scripts will be available to hire from Stables Box Office. I appreciate that auditionees may want to audition for each of the roles listed below but if you could indicate a preference order in the audition this will be helpful as there may not be time to hear all three audition pieces. During the audition you be given some direction. Recalls will be chemistry reads between the different characters and these pieces will be sent over to those recalled.
Characters:
General Note: For all the characters I am not looking for impersonations of of the women it w I am also fluid on the ages of the women and although both Christie and Rutherford are in their seventies both can be played by women 45 plus. All three parts are large roles and are on stage for the majority of the show.
Agatha Christie – She is intrigued by Margaret whilst trying and sets about trying to solve her secrets whilst trying to hold on to her own. She is sharp and frustrated about having to give up control of her beloved Marple.
Magaret Rutherford – She has two personas the Margaret Rutherford of stage and screen and a more vulnerable ‘Peggy’ who is hiding a tragic secret from her past.
The Spinster – A delightful and mischievous character with hints that she might be Miss Marple. The actress must be comfortable in interacting with the audience as she breaks the fourth wall and narrates the action to the audience. She also interacts with Christie and Rutherford under different guises.
