The Turn Of The Screw
Based on the novella by Henry James.
Adapted and directed by Timothy Blackwell.
The summer of 1890. A young man arrives at an isolated country house to be tutor to two angelic orphans. But the house holds dark secrets. Evil threatens the children – an evil that comes from unquiet minds or unquiet graves?
World premiere of a new adaptation of Henry James’ classic horror story.
It may surprise you to hear of the local connection we have to this story; Henry James completed writing The Turn of the Screw in 1898, while living at Lamb House in Rye.
The disturbing and enigmatic heart of this tale continues to inspire generations of artists to produce adaptations. Notably, Benjamin Britten’s 1954 opera, and Jack Clayton’s 1961 film,The Innocents– with a screenplay worked on by Truman Capote and John Mortimer.
Author Stephen King described The Turn of the Screw and The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson, as the only two great supernatural works of horror in a century. He argued that both contain the basis of the horror genre; ‘secrets best left untold and things left best unsaid’.
