The Producing Team

The Producing Team (formerly Programme Advisory Group) is composed of 9 members, including a Chair, Vice-Chair, Secretary and Production Treasurer. The Chair is voted in at the Stables Theatre Annual General Meeting (AGM) and will also be an officer on the Stables Theatre Council of Management (COM). Other prominent members of the Stables Theatre, such as the Chair of the COM, or marketing and technical representatives may sit in Producing Team meetings to provide advice and reports for various aspects of the Stables Theatre where they relate to producing performances. The remainder of the group, including the Deputy Chair is made up of Stables Theatre members who are voted in at the AGM or by existing members of the Producing Team and may take responsibility for roles such as Licensingand Safeguarding.

All Producing Team members will be expected to provide operational support and oversight to in-house productions and act as the theatre’s ‘producers’, overseeing that production from its selection to the end of the run as a “Production Link” or “Link” for short. The Producing Team strongly believes in allowing Directors to have creative freedom over their productions – Links will not participate in the creative and artistic direction of a production, unless invited to do so by the Director.

The Producing Team select plays and events for the upcoming season, which may mean selecting plays and choosing Directors for those productions, or accepting pitches by Directors for their choice of play.  It’s a fun and rewarding task but it also takes skill and experience to select the variety of plays needed to find the right mix of genres and style for a season of theatre.

Producing Team members are still committed members of the Stables Theatre and so may pitch or offer to direct a production. When doing so, any decisions made on the pitch will be done so without that Producing Team member’s involvement or knowledge. Where multiple members of the Producing Team have pitched productions or offered to direct for a season of productions, the Producing Team will endeavour to ensure that no more than 25% of the productions in that year are directed by Producing Team members, except in cases of emergency or otherwise being unable to find a director for a production.

Producing community theatre is a rewarding and important responsibility. To be a member of the Producing Team, you should have a good knowledge of theatre, and an understanding of the local community and the practicalities needed to mount productions and events – Producing Teammembers are required to understand and take an active part in the running of a community venue.

We are regularly looking for new members to join the Producing Team. If you are a member of the theatre, interested in joining us and feel that you have experience or expertise that would be beneficial we would very much like to hear from you. Please contact the Producing Team Chair at producingteamchair@stablestheatre.co.uk and tell us what you feel you have to offer. All names will then be submitted to the Producing Team, discussed and the best candidate/s invited to join where spaces are available.

Producing Team members serve for two years at which point they will have to stand down; however they will be able to re-apply for the Producing Team – a call may also go out for new members at the time of each AGM.

Producing Team meetings are held monthly at the Stables Theatre (usually on the first Tuesday evening of each month).
