‘No. There’s no confusion. It’s grief and it’s the one good thing a person leaves behind.’

Jaime knows he is dead. Tommy isn’t convinced. And now that the conservative artist Tommy has a child on the way, he and his progressive brother Jamie reflect on their deceased mother. Learning how they’ve both held onto grief, and how far they will go to keep it. This new play set in a tiny, coastal town in Ireland is a beautifully written exploration of loss; focusing on two charming characters with a touching and genuine connection. With dry humour throughout, overlying a collection of fears, anxieties and longing the brothers are scared to admit to.

This play reading is intended to give a sense of a full production and will focus heavily on character work, establishing a strong, believable relationship between brothers that will drive the narrative. This reading is scheduled for 17th October and will hold a weekly rehearsal from the point of casting until performance.

Jamie– (late 30’s-early 40’s) Jamie is a primary school teacher who is beloved by his students. He has a strained relationship with his father due to his homosexuality which has left him with a pessimistic outlook on life. However, he has remained very close with his brother and mother.

Tommy– (30’s) A stay at home husband and an expectant father. He feels a lot of guilt for not looking after his mother on her deathbed. Holds a deep passion for painting and fantasy which he uses as an escape. Tries to be optimistic, which often clashes with his brother’s pessimism.
