Synopsis

“You’re the woman I watch from my train. I call you Jess. He’s Jason and you’re Jess. You have everything I lost. You’re everything I should have been.” Rachel Watson longs for a different life. Her only escape is the perfect couple she watches through the train window every day, happy and in love. Or so it appears. When Rachel learns that the woman she’s been secretly watching has suddenly disappeared, she finds herself as a witness and even a suspect in a thrilling mystery in which she will face bigger revelations than she could ever have anticipated.

A new stage adaptation based on Paula Hawkins’ international bestseller and the blockbuster DreamWorks film, The Girl on the Train is a gripping mystery/suspense thriller.

Characters

Megan Hipwell (Female) 18-25

Idealistic and aloof with a troubled past she is constantly running from. Will appear on stage throughout the entire play. 2-3 of 3 rehearsals per week.

AUDITION PIECE

Rachel Watson (Female) 30-45

Alcoholic with fantasist tendencies. Unreliable narrator to the audience. Appears in every scene, so availability for rehearsals will be taken into account. 3 of 3 rehearsals per week.

AUDITION PIECE

DI Gaskill (Female) 40-50

Lead Detective, who is investigating Megan’s disappearance. Authoritative. Strong,
grounded stage presence. We have chosen to change the gender of this character to better suit the themes of this production. 2-3 of 3 rehearsals per week.

AUDITION PIECE

Anna Watson (Female) 25-35

Second wife of Tom and mother to new-born, Evie. Youthful but not young, seemingly put-together “Pinterest/ Instagram” style new mother. 1-2 of 3 rehearsals per week.

AUDITION PIECE

Tom Watson (Male) 30-45

Ex-husband of Rachel, boyfriend of Anna and father to new-born, Evie. Seemingly charming middle-class businessman type, in truth a villain who is controlling, cruel and narcissistic. 2-3 of 3 rehearsals per week.

AUDITION PIECE

Kamal Abdic (Male) 25-40

Professional therapist and emotional confident for his former client, Megan. We are looking primarily for an actor of Black, Mixed-race, South or East Asian ethnicity for this role. 2 of 3 rehearsals per week.

AUDITION PIECE

Scott Hipwell (Male) 20-30

Husband of Megan. Handsome, but unkempt, with an unpredictable temper. Ideally
physically fit. 2-3 of 3 rehearsals per week.

AUDITION PIECE

Passengers/ Bystanders (Male/ Female/ Non-binary) 18+

We are looking for an ensemble of everyday people who will be featured throughout the majority of the play as passengers on the train. You will work with the director to develop your own character and their significance to the story. Passengers/bystanders will also deliver the off-stage dialogue of other characters (as if voices in Rachel’s head) as well as additional speaking and non-speaking character roles. 1 of 3 rehearsals per week (usually Sunday mornings, if not either Monday or Wednesday evening)

AUDITION PIECE

Please audition using your own accent. Being off-book isn’t mandatory, but a familiarity with the text is encouraged in case you are given some light direction.

Please contact Adam – adambuntingsmith@outlook.com if you have any questions or need to discuss anything regarding auditions or the production.
