America Ground
Music by Bob Tipler.
Directed by John Knowles and Tina Pelini.
Prior to the 1850’s, America Ground was home to thousands of itinerant settlers who, due to chronic housing shortages, took advantage of a post storm shingle beach to claim the “ground” as their own. Paying no taxes and rents, and referencing the revolution in the Americas, they declared themselves independent. Eventually the Crown claimed the land and it was made ‘good’ by the incoming, morally dubious, Robertson and Brisco.
Fetch Theatre presents the history of the area alongside contemporary themes of high rents, displacement and dubious water quality with earworm sea shanties, musical-hall style songs and soap-opera drama.
