AUDITION NOTICE – THE GLASS MENAGERIE

Auditions will be held on Saturday September 7th for THE GLASS MENAGERIE by Tennessee Williams which will be presented as the centrepiece of the Stables Theatre’s Tennessee Williams Festival.  The play will be directed by Chris New (The Pilgrim Plays, Harvest and The Power of Love)

The play is Tennessee William’s masterpiece and offers exceptional roles for a company of 4 actors.  All actors will be auditioned and will be expected to have very good line learning skills, and an ability to sustain large roles in an emotionally complex play.  Accent work will also be required – support will be offered for this but, an aptitude for accents will be advantageous.
If you are interested in being a part of the festival but feel that you do not have the experience required for this production – or you are unsuccessful in auditioning for one of these roles – then you may wish to consider joining the Stables Theatre regular acting class which will be presenting a series of short plays and poetic works under the direction of Chris New on the first three nights of the festival.  This will be an opportunity to try a smaller role but with equally arresting texts.

Production Dates –
The production will run at the Stables Theatre Thursday 21st, Friday 22nd and Saturday 23rd November (with the option of an extra performance Sunday 23rd, depending on ticket sales).

The production will rehearse on mutually agreed times on evenings and at weekends.  All cast members will be required to be available to attend technical and dress rehearsals from Sunday 17th November through to opening night.

ROLES

Amanda Wingfield

Female

Age – 50+

The matriarch of a crumbling family.   Amanda was a Southern belle in her youth, and she clings to this romantic vision of her past rather than accepting her current circumstances of poverty and abandonment.

Tom Wingfield

Male

Age – approx 25-50

Tom plays a dual role in the play as both the narrator and protagonist. The play is from the perspective of Tom’s memories.  He feels fettered by the constraints of his job and his family and yearns for escape in all aspects of his life. Dissatisfied with his monotonous warehouse job, he writes poetry on the side and keeps secrets.

Laura Wingfield

Female

Age –  approx 18-35

Laura is deeply fragile, both emotionally and physically: she is painfully shy, and a childhood illness has left one leg slightly shorter than the other, making her walk with a limp.  Despite her fragility, Laura does not willfully delude herself about the nature of her reality. She accepts her leg injury and her shyness without trying to pretend that she is another version of herself.

Jim O’Connor
Male
Age – approx 25-50
Jim works with Tom at the warehouse. He and Tom were acquaintances in high school, where Jim was the hero: sports star, lead in the theater productions, class president, etc.  A nice, ordinary man who is unaware of the darker side of life.
